Split Sightseeing

Ideas for Split sights locations on your Croatia holiday

Split is Croatia’s second largest city, and is located on a peninsula on the eastern shore of the Adriatic Sea. This is a very old city, and was originally founded as a Greek colony. Like many places in Croatia, Split is packed with history, and this is a huge draw for many holidaymakers – it doesn’t hurt that the city is beautiful and located near the sea as well.

Those who come to Split looking for history, architecture, sunshine, and a great time will not be disappointed. Here are some Split sightseeing options that you will find interesting.

Archaeological Museum

Anyone who has an interest in history – even just a sliver of an interest – will want to visit this museum, which is considered to be the oldest in Croatia. It was founded in 1820, and has been at the present location since 1922. From gems to priceless artifacts, the museum tells the story of the people of Croatia from the earliest times. Considering the amount of knowledge you will gain, the cost of admittance is but a pittance.

The Peristil is one of the most interesting architectural sights in Split city,
being part of Diocletian Palace structure.

Marjan Forest Park

Sometimes, the best thing to do on a vacation is find a nice, peaceful spot in the woods to relax and let your worries fade away. The Marjan Forest Park is the perfect place to do just that. By climbing the Marjan Stairway, you can ascend to Telegrin. From there, you can view the sea and a number of islands.

Palace of Diocletian

One of the most popular sights in Split is the Palace of Diocletian, which was build more than 1700 years ago. UNESCO designated it as a World Heritage Site. Some of the most popular sights at the Palace are the Temple of Jupiter, the Cathedral of St. Dominius, and the Peristil.

Mestrovic Gallery

This gallery houses many of the works of Ivan Mestrovic, a world renowned sculptor and friend of Rodin. This gallery was originally the home of the sculptor – he lived there in the 1930s. The gallery, which has more than eighty statues, 17 drawings, 28 wood reliefs, and more, was started in 1950. The artwork is magnificent, especially that which can be found in the garden setting.

Many people can just spend hours wandering the city and finding a variety of different shops and restaurants that interest them, as well as taking in (and photographing) all of the various pieces of architecture. By visiting the above Split sights you will find your wandering around much more rewarding and memorable.

No matter how you choose to spend your vacation in Split, you can be sure it will be a good one, while you soak in one or more of the many beautiful Split sightseeing locations.
